In March 2023, the Shiraz Revolutionary Court issued a death sentence for two defendants who attacked Shahcheragh Shrine in this city. The names of the convicts are Mohammad Ramez Rashidi and Seyed Naeem Hashem Qatali. The Chief Justice of Fars province announced that the death sentence would be executed "in public!"
The terrorist attack on Shahcheragh Shrine in Shiraz occurred on October 26, 2022. Thirteen people were killed in the attack. In all CCTV tapes, from different angles inside and outside the shrine courtyard, only one person with a weapon can be seen shooting. Neither in these videos nor in any other documents, except for the shooter who was killed by the officers, no other person or persons have been identified who participated in this attack.
In a forced confession video, security officials identified Mohammad Ramez Rashidi and several other migrant workers from Azerbaijan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan as members of ISIS and responsible for planning the attack on Shahcheragh. Sometime later, the Fars news agency added Seyed Naeem Hashemi Qatali, an Afghan, to the list of defendants as a "Third Tier Accused" in a report titled "The Court of the Terrorist Attack on Shahcheragh."
The judicial authorities have kept the details of the interrogation and court proceedings hidden and have not allowed the defendants to have legal defense by independent lawyers. Mohammad Ramez Rashidi's death sentence was issued only based on his "confessions" under torture. According to the Fars news agency, the death sentence of Seyed Naeem Hashem Qatali was given for "his receiving people sent to Iran as a caretaker of the building."
Mohammad Ramez Rashidi and Seyed Naeem Hashem Qatali are two Afghan migrant workers. Except for the "confessions," no document shows their participation in the terrorist attack on Shahcheragh. In their security video, intelligence agents claim ISIS and Western spy agencies were involved in the September 2022 street "riots," the nationwide protests following the murder of Mahsa Gina Amini. Forced confessions and show trials of "ISIS members" are intended to prove this false claim.
We demand the cancellation of the death sentence of Mohammad Ramez Rashidi and Seyyed Naeem Hashem Qatali and the annulment of the court proceedings. The accused must be tried in a fair court with the participation of their optional lawyers.
Update: Regrettably, the death sentence of Mohammad Ramez Rashidi and Naeem Hashem Qatali was carried out in public on the morning of Saturday, July 8, 2023.
