A Petition Against Academic Suspension and Exile of Tabriz University Students

In recent times, eight students from the Tabriz University of Medical Sciences were met with punitive academic suspension and exile, a decision made by the Central Disciplinary Council of the Ministry of Health of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The cause: on March 7, 2023, these students protested the horrifying chemical attacks that occurred in girls' schools across the country.
Upon issuing these harsh sentences, a petition bearing the signatures of 2000 students was circulated to voice opposition against these disciplinary actions. However, this act of unity and defiance was met with further intimidation. University security officers targeted more than 120 signatories, coercing them into the university security building, where they were threatened with expulsion and pressured into rescinding their signatures.
- Mirmehdi Mousavian, a medical student admitted in September 2020, was given a four-semester suspension and exiled to Semnan City, as dictated by the Central Disciplinary Council of the Ministry of Health.
- Mohammad Amin Sultanzadeh, another medical student who began his studies in September 2020, faces a three-semester suspension and exile to Kashan, as per the same Council's decision.
- Soheila Sepidehdam, a pharmacy student since 2015, was handed a four-semester suspension and forced relocation to Ahvaz by the Disciplinary Council.
- Ali Parveen, a pharmacy student since 2019, was dealt a three-semester suspension and forced relocation to Ardabil City by the Council.
- Elaha Ashrafpour, a nursing student admitted in 2021, has been sentenced to a two-semester suspension and exile to Urmia City by the Council.
- Reza Ansarian, a medical student since 2018, was given a three-semester suspension and relocation to Urmia City per the Council's directive.
As the undersigned, we petition for the revocation of these excessive disciplinary actions—academic suspension and exile—imposed on the students of Tabriz University of Medical Sciences.
