In Defense of Two Symbols of Journalism Committed to the Truth: Elaheh Mohammadi and Niloufar Hamedi
They have sentenced Elaheh Mohammadi and Niloufar Hamedi to long prison terms: Elaheh Mohammadi for 12 years and Niloufar Hamedi for 13 years. The Islamic Republic's Judiciary officials have announced that six years of imprisonment for Elaheh Mohammadi and seven years for Niloufar Hamedi are applicable.
What is their crime? Niloufar Hamedi bore witness to Jina Amini's fragile state in the hospital, and Elaheh Mohammadi chronicled the sad procession of Jina's final journey in Aichi Cemetery, Saqqez.
They have prepared a heavy criminal case for each of them. They falsely connect them to centers abroad, and the only thing they do not say about them is this: these two journalists did not turn a blind eye to oppression and told the truth in reporting. They remained committed.
The unjust prosecution and severe sentencing of Elaheh Mohammadi and Niloufar Hamedi are stark extensions of the ongoing suppression against the "Women, Life, Freedom" movement. This reflects the Islamic Republic of Iran's bleak history of stifling free, justice-driven voices. From its early onslaught against independent journalism, to the detention and execution of numerous writers, the serial political assassinations, and the intensifying stranglehold of censorship and relentless harassment of journalists, they've drawn a line in the sands of repression. However, as they've deepened this line, they've failed to mute the persistent calls of those seeking freedom.
Defending the truth is a collective task. With the support of civil society, the journalist can investigate, shed light on the dark rooms, and tear the veil of lies. Capable and committed journalism shows a civil society resistant to oppression.
The harrowing sentences handed down to Elaheh Mohammadi and Niloufar Hamedi cast a dark shadow over journalism and beckoned us to recognize and champion the power of truthful reporting. At this pivotal juncture, as the Middle East grapples with conflict, specifically against the vulnerable residents of Gaza under the guise of countering terrorism, the importance of authentic journalism becomes even more pronounced. Without it, our understanding of reality becomes perilously distorted, shaped by the whims of the powerful. Gone would be the poignant visuals of loss and devastation, replaced by sanitized depictions of modern war rooms, calculating leaders, high-tech weaponry, and a narrative focused on control and suppression.
By endorsing this petition, we raise our voice against the unjust treatment of two intrepid journalists, Elaheh Mohammadi and Niloufar Hamedi. Their work stands as a beacon of courageous and anti-oppressive journalism in Iran. Yet, they now find themselves incarcerated alongside other writers, journalists, and civil rights advocates. We greatly admire them and reiterate our fervent plea: Free the political prisoners!
We urge fellow journalists to tread the path valiantly illuminated by figures like Elaheh Mohammadi and Niloufar Hamedi. It is a path defined by an unwavering commitment to truth, a relentless battle against oppression, and a critical perspective that boldly challenges and confronts the corridors of power. The future of journalism—and the truth it seeks to protect—depends on it.
