Ms. Neda Al-Nashif, Honorable Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights of the United Nations,

We, a group of women's rights activists, have learned about your upcoming visit to Tehran from February 3rd to the 5th to assess the human rights situation in Iran. As female activists who have diligently worked for over four decades to expose gender apartheid and oppression in Iran, we have mixed feelings about your journey - both hopeful and concerned.

Your trip takes place amidst a grave situation where the Islamic regime has escalated efforts to suppress the revolutionary 'Woman-Life-Freedom' movement through increased threats, intimidation, arrests, and executions. Sadly, the children of thousands of families are currently imprisoned, awaiting death sentences, or have been executed in recent months and days. Currently, more than sixty women political prisoners are on a hunger strike to protest these executions, along with other political prisoners voicing their support.

Our apprehension stems from the possibility of you being unable to meet with these hunger-striking prisoners or the families of those executed and the protestors who are sentenced to death. Without such direct access, it raises concerns about how you will gain insights into the deplorable violations of human rights and women's rights in Iran.

Furthermore, as women activists, we are deeply troubled by the fact that until a few years ago, many female politicians from other nations used to visit Iran wearing the hijab, influenced by the propaganda of the Islamic Republic.

For over four decades, the regime attempted to portray the Islamic hijab as a tradition of Iranian society to the world. However, the revolutionary 'Woman-Life-Freedom' movement has made it clear that the Islamic hijab is not a national tradition but rather a symbol of the ruling regime's ideology.

No government should need to spend vast amounts of money, employ patrols to enforce hijab, and resort to violence, imprisonment, and intimidation of young people to preserve a so-called national tradition. Therefore, as women's rights activists, we join with others who have expressed concerns both inside and outside Iran and respectfully request the following from you:

  1. To respect those who have died or are still imprisoned due to the violation of their most basic human right—the freedom to choose their clothing—we ask that you, in solidarity with the women of Iran, not accept wearing the mandatory hijab, which is a clear example of the violation of women's rights. As the UN representative for human rights, accepting the mandatory hijab would disregard the years of struggle by women and the sacrifices made by those who have lost their lives while fighting against the imposition of the hijab, particularly within the context of the recent 'Women-Life-Freedom' movement.
  2. Make it a priority to include meetings with political prisoners on hunger strikes and the families of those who have been executed or are sentenced to death in your travel itinerary.

In conclusion, we urge you to align with activists and supporters of the 'Woman-Life-Freedom' movement. This solidarity with civil society in oppressed countries will generate greater strength in dismantling anti-human rights laws and fostering justice, equality, and peace.

Thank you for considering our concerns.

Sincerely,

Afsaneh Sadatmousavi
