We, the undersigned, call for the immediate release of the allocated water for Lake Urmia and its surrounding wetlands during February and March. This period presents a unique opportunity where agricultural demands are minimal, and the natural flow of river base water is optimal, enabling the maximum volume of water released from the reservoir dams within the Lake Urmia catchment area to reach the lake and its satellite wetlands effectively.
In the provinces of West Azerbaijan and East Azerbaijan, which encompass 90% of Lake Urmia's catchment area, agricultural activities are dormant in February, March, and early April due to cold weather conditions. This inactivity offers a strategic window to release Lake Urmia's water allocation from the dams, totaling 1.4 billion cubic meters, directly into the lake's basin.
The catchment area of Lake Urmia, fed by rivers such as Zarinerood, Siminerood, Mahabadchai, Shahrchai, and Godarchai, accumulates significant snowfall towards the end of winter. This accumulation allows for a precise calculation of renewable water resources, facilitating the timely release of Lake Urmia's water share from the dams during this critical period.
Recent rainfall within the Lake Urmia catchment area has been promising, with totals surpassing 140 mm since the start of the water year, nearing the long-term average. This increased precipitation further supports the feasibility and urgency of our request. Therefore, we urge the establishment of a dedicated task force by the governor of West Azerbaijan province, who also oversees the Center for the Restoration of Lake Urmia, in close collaboration with provincial authorities, the Ministry of Energy, Jihad of Agriculture, and the Environmental Protection Organization of Iran. Our plea is for the immediate release of water from reservoir dams, including Bukan Dam, Mahabad Dam, Silveh Dam, Chaparabad Dam, and Shahrchai Dam, into Lake Urmia's bed in these final days of the winter season to ensure the lake's revival and sustainability.

به گزارش ایرنا از وزارت نیرو، احمد قندهاری ادامه داد: بر اساس برنامه منابع و مصارف سدها که ابتدای هرسال آبی تهیه، مصوب و ابلاغ می‌شود، میزان رهاسازی برای مصارف مختلف از سدهای کل کشور و همچنین حوضه آبریز دریاچه ارومیه تعیین می‌شود. وی افزود: با توجه به کاهش جدی بارش‌های پائیزه از یک سو و نیز بهبود وضعیت بارش‌های زمستانه از سوی دیگر، زمان رهاسازی آب از سدهای دریاچه ارومیه برای تامین بخشی از حقابه دریاچه مشخص شد.
