We strongly object to the actions taken by the Cyber Police of the Islamic Republic of Iran (FATA) on Monday, February 5, 2024, regarding the unauthorized confiscation of Ahmad Bayati's Instagram account.
Mr. Bayati, a respected photographer based in Tehran with approximately fifteen thousand followers, has suffered unjustly due to this action. The Fata Police deleted all of Mr. Bayati's photographs and followers and replaced his profile image with the Fata Police logo, accompanied by a derogatory message purportedly in the interest of "public safety." The stated rationale for this seizure was an alleged violation of the compulsory hijab law, citing the visibility of hair in photos of several women.
We believe this intrusion represents a breach of privacy and an illicit appropriation of a citizen's data and information. It also constitutes an attack on freedom of expression and an infringement of digital rights. Through this petition, we condemn the Iranian government's policy of cyber repression and demand the immediate restoration of Mr. Ahmad Bayati's Instagram account and all its original content.
