My name is Hana Nasouri (Vakili). I am 32 years old, a Kurdish refugee living in Sweden, and have been seeking asylum for several years with my mother, Saeedeh Vakili, my husband, Rozgar Roshani, and our child. After a lengthy process of over four and a half years, while my mother and husband have been granted temporary residence permits, I find myself unjustly excluded from these provisions. The Swedish government has issued an expulsion order against me, labeling me as an “extremist” based on the Swedish security police’s assessment. This accusation aligns distressingly with the punitive measures I fled from in the Islamic Republic of Iran and Turkey—countries that have similarly criminalized support for Kurdish political movements.

Both my mother and I were born in Sanandaj, Iran, but because my father is a citizen of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, I was denied Iranian citizenship. Despite my mother being Iranian, I was never issued an Iranian birth certificate, only a “green card” of limited use. Growing up in Iran, I faced constant discrimination at school and other places requiring a national ID constantly reminded of my lack of rights as an Iranian citizen.

Moreover, my lack of a birth certificate barred me from participating in the national entrance exam for public universities. After much effort, I was admitted to Azad University, only to be expelled due to the political activities of my uncle, Farhad Vakili. A committed political and environmental activist, Farhad Vakili was arrested in 2006, endured extensive torture, and was executed in 2010 after a brief trial, accused of affiliations with the Kurdistan Free Life Party (PJAK).

Following my uncle’s execution, our family became a target of intensified scrutiny by Iran’s security forces, forcing us to relocate to the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI) in search of safety. However, the influence of Turkish and Iranian security agencies in the KRI rendered a secure and peaceful life impossible. After enduring great hardships and significant expenses, we arrived in Sweden in December 2015, seeking refuge and the hope for a better future.

Regrettably, our dreams have been shattered by the Swedish Immigration Office, which seeks to deport me based on alleged political activities. I am determined to pursue a peaceful and dignified life with my family, including my one-and-a-half-year-old child, after enduring years of persecution and instability in Iran and Iraq.

Through this petition, I implore the Swedish Immigration Department to reconsider its decision to deport me. I ask for the chance to live safely and contribute positively in Sweden, a country we hoped would be our final sanctuary.
