Zahra Sajedinia, a 38-year-old women’s rights activist from Bukan, West Azerbaijan Province, Iran, has been unjustly sentenced to 10 months in prison on charges of “propaganda against the regime.” The sentence was issued by Branch 101 of the Criminal Court of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Bukan and officially communicated to her on September 29, 2024.
Zahra was initially arrested on August 1, 2022, after being summoned to the Intelligence Office in Bukan. She was then transferred to a detention center in Urmia, where she was held for several days before being released on bail, pending the completion of her trial. Zahra has 20 days from the date of receiving the court ruling to appeal.
The charges against Zahra are baseless and lack any evidence, aimed solely at silencing her advocacy for women’s rights. Her arrest and sentencing represent a gross violation of her rights and an attempt to suppress the voice of women in Iran.
We, the undersigned, call for the immediate and unconditional release of Zahra Sajedinia. We urge the Iranian authorities to drop all charges against her and respect her fundamental right to freedom of expression and peaceful activism. Zahra’s continued persecution is a violation of international human rights standards and must end.
