Currently, 19 Azerbaijani activists are either imprisoned in the Islamic Republic of Iran (IRI) or have been sentenced to long-term imprisonment and other additional punishments based on unjust rulings. Security forces primarily arrested these activists for advocating for the rights of Azerbaijani Turks in various cities, including Tehran, Rasht, Tabriz, Ardabil, and Shabestar. The IRI judiciary subsequently sentenced them to prison terms ranging from several months to several years.
The imprisonment of Azerbaijani activists with long sentences is a blatant violation of human rights by the security forces and judiciary, as well as evidence of systematic discrimination against Azerbaijani Turks in the Islamic Republic of Iran. In addition to receiving lengthy prison terms, these prisoners are subjected to abuse by prison authorities and face numerous issues regarding medical treatment, leave, and other rights. They are often forced to go on hunger strikes to access basic amenities. Most of these prisoners were held in detention without trial for extended periods and were only tried after lengthy delays.
The charges against these activists mainly include "propaganda against the regime," "assembly and collusion," "disrupting national security," "disturbing public opinion," and similar accusations. Some of these activists have also been sentenced to additional punishments such as "prohibition from membership in political parties, groups, and associations, prohibition from using social media and the press, prohibition from leaving the country, and internal exile."
Below is a list of these activists, in alphabetical order, along with their charges and sentences:

We, the undersigned, demand the immediate release of Azerbaijani political prisoners. These individuals have been unjustly sentenced to harsh punishments and inhumane prison conditions for their civil and cultural activism in support of Azerbaijani Turk rights. Their charges are baseless, and their trials have been conducted without adherence to fair trial principles. The discriminatory treatment and repression of these activists violate human rights and Iran's international obligations.
