Since its establishment in 2000, the Azerbaijan Steel Factory (Mianeh Steel Complex) has caused significant environmental, financial, and social problems in the region. Despite its years of operation and claims of obtaining an environmental permit this year, the factory remains a serious source of pollution, endangering the environment and nearby residents' lives.

Toxic Gas Emissions

The factory's most critical issue is the environmental pollution it generates. The release of toxic gases and particulate matter seriously threatens the region's air quality and the health of its residents and wildlife.

Discharge of Industrial Waste into Water Sources

Additionally, the factory's industrial waste and wastewater discharge have severely contaminated groundwater and soil, rendering nearby agricultural lands unfit. The factory's proximity to vital water sources such as the Qarangu and Aidughmush Rivers and the Aidughmush Dam has polluted these habitats, damaging aquatic life and agricultural yields.

Noise Pollution

The factory also generates persistent noise pollution, which severely affects the mental and physical well-being of residents in Islamabad Village, which is located just 100 meters from the complex.

Overuse of Groundwater Resources

Excessive exploitation of groundwater resources through numerous wells for industrial purposes, irrigation, and sandwashing has become a grave threat to the region's water reserves.

Financial Corruption

Another major issue with the factory is its lack of transparency and accountability in financial matters. In the fall of 2023, reports emerged of arrests linked to embezzlement within the factory. However, no detailed information about the extent of the corruption or the outcomes of investigations has been released. This lack of transparency reflects serious flaws in the facility's management and oversight.

Failure to Pay Workers' Wages

In addition to these problems, disregard for workers' rights has become a critical concern. Delays in wage payments have forced workers to stage strikes and protests. The latest such protest occurred on December 19, 2024, when a group of workers gathered at the factory in response to the management's neglect of their demands.

Our Demands

We, the undersigned, call on the government to take immediate action to address these issues. Specifically, we demand:

  1. Immediate measures to reduce environmental pollution caused by the factory.
  2. Transparency and accountability in financial corruption cases and mismanagement.
  3. Regular and timely payment of wages to workers employed at the Mianeh Steel Complex.

We urge the authorities to resolve these critical problems swiftly for the sake of the region's environment, workers, and communities.
